Johnny Cash was the first westerner to learn of Stalin’s death. He worked as a Morse code operator intercepting Soviet Army transmissions while serving in the Air Force. On March 3, 1953 he received a telegram noting that Stalin had died making him the first westerner to be aware of the death.
