And for the wider culture, the Isle of WightFestival of 1970 – by far the biggest festival ever held in the UK at the time – was a watershed. When it opened its gates 50 years ago today, the scale and success of the event (in all but financial terms) made it not only the essence of Sixties liberation, but also its culmination.
